Without light there can be no photography. Harnessing light and releasing it into the darkness in varying amounts, directions and sizes, reveals the shape, form and texture of the subject.
Controlling the amount of light that falls in the darkness can help to tell the story in a picture. Light can control the mood and atmosphere of the story being told, or the light itself can be the main character within the story.
Each time I capture an image on my camera I am ‘painting’ with the light that I see. In these images however with the darkness as my canvas, I can see more clearly my brush, and the nature of the medium with which I work with, the light itself. Light can be truly ‘painted’ into the darkness but darkness cannot be ‘painted into the light’.
